The McKnight Doctoral Fellowship Program is designed to address the underrepresentation of African American and Hispanic faculty at colleges and universities in Florida by increasing the pool of citizens qualified with Ph.D. degrees to teach at the college and university levels. Unigwe will complete his Ph.D. program under the mentorship of associate professor Haesuk Park, Ph.D. Unigwe’s research is focused on infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDs. As this is a disease with significant racial disparities, his goal is to seek answers to many research questions concerning the health and safety of the patient population to further help to make HIV/AIDs a disease of the past.
