Abdullah Alalwan, Pharm.D. a graduate student in the department of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy, received the Poster Finalist Award at the 21st International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, or ISPOR, Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. from May 21-25. The award recognizes authors of the top research abstracts presented at the ISPOR meeting that featured over 1,800 presentations.

Alalwan presented a poster titled, “Trends in the utilization of warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation.” The research assesses the overall anticoagulation therapy utilization among elderly patients with atrial fibrillation using Medicare claims data. It also determines the prevalence of warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban and apixaban) use and the transition between oral anticoagulants from 2008-14.
